Negative Adverbs 🏁
The most common grammatical negation is the two-part negative adverb, as in Je ne sais pas (I don't know). Here, you're negating the verb sais, thus the need for a negative adverb.
When it comes to negating other parts of speech, you need other negative constructions 🤹♀️
Negative adjectives negate nouns by denying or limiting them.
Negative pronouns negate nouns by replacing them.
Negative conjunctions negate clauses or groups.
And while articles themselves don't negate, after negation some of them change to a different form: the negative de.
In answer to a question or request, you can just say non ! 🙅 or try one of these synonyms.
Double Negatives
In English, two negatives are said to make a positive: that is, they cancel one another out, and this is grammatically incorrect (officially, anyway).
In French, however, négation double is alive and well. 💫 Two negatives sometimes make a positive, while other times they combine to make the negation stronger or more specific.
Situational Negation
👉 Negation also depends on the language register.
The above rules apply to normal, grammatically correct French, but it's essential to learn about informal negation 🧢 as you will hear it on a daily basis.
And there's also formal negation 🎩 : three different negative constructions that you will encounter in formal contexts, especially writing (literature, history, news). Two of these consist of ne without pas but for completely different reasons. 🤔
