La Francophonie refers to the world of French speakers - the millions of actual people who speak 👩🎨 French 🥖 - as well as to an international organization that unites those speakers and promotes the language and related issues around the globe. 🌎
In anticipation of la Journée internationale de la Francophonie, celebrated on 20 March 📅, today's issue of Lawless French à fond takes an in-depth look at la Francophonie and everything to do with the French language.

The first French-speaking country was of course France. 🇫🇷 But did you know that it has several other names?
And that, likewise, "French" has many synonyms?

French-Speaking Countries - Though it's named for the roughly hexagonally shaped country that we all know and love in Western Europe, the French language extends far beyond the borders of France, in myriad and frankly confusing ways. 💫

Researching a francophone region or country and writing a report or country study is an interesting project for French classes or for independent studiers looking to spice up their self-instruction. This project is perfect as a long-term activity for intermediate and advanced students, though it can also be adapted for beginners.
