If Bastille Day is your favorite holiday, félicitations - you're a Francophile! Sure, everyone enjoys fireworks, parades, and daring tales of prison breaks, and aren't we always looking for an excuse to eat crêpes and drink wine? But there's a lot more to the French national holiday than that, so ...
Let's find out how much you know about Bastille Day! 🇫🇷
Do you know how to pronounce bastille? Do you also know that you don't actually say that word when talking about this holiday in French?
Today's issue of Lawless French à fond takes an in-depth look at the French national holiday and explains everything you could possibly want to know about the celebration of Bastille Day.
Bastille Basics
Happy Bastille Day! 📣
The French will never say anything like "bonne Bastille" or "joyeuse fête de la Bastille." Unlike the rest of the world, the French don't closely associate their Fête nationale, which they call le Quatorze Juillet, with the storming of the Bastille. At most, they might generically wish each other Bonne fête ! but even that is unlikely. Funnily enough, the biggest fans of France's national holiday tend to be from anywhere but France.
Even the expression Vive la France !, ubiquitous during Francophiles' Bastille Day celebrations, is for the French themselves more tied to politics and sports than to le Quatorze Juillet.
